Not sure where to place these resources, but I am leading the effort in my school district to develop 21st century learning environments. We have a mission statement, a statement of core beliefs, a list of qualities of highly successful schools we used to develop planning priorities, a list of related goals and strategies that grew out of our work with teachers, students, parents, administrators, elected officials and the community. I also have the strategic plan that summarizes it all, but the individual pieces tell a great story of learning and leading. Microsoft actually is ready to publish a case study about our work.

I also have a vision statement that tries to summarize what we want to create. The technology piece is another story that I have been developing over the last few month: Web 2.0 Birthday - July 2007 at BLC07 and October 2007 at K12OnlinConference leading to my presentations to the faculties in our seven schools and to the parents and school councils in our seven schools.

I am also leading a statewide coalition of professional organizations and practitioners to redesign the high schools in our state so students are better prepared for the 21st century. We currently have components of / an outline for a draft framework for systemic change. Last week I presented the case for including Web 2.0 pedagogies.

After reading a post by David Warlick regarding our schools having an Iron Curtain -- I wonder how we could design this ideal school so that it is less "repressive"? (Stephanie)

one-room school house
teacher as a learner
teacher might not be older than the rest? older students teach/mentor
ability-grouping vs. age-based grouping
-- how would students be pushed in this kind of environment? Needs balance...
-- inclusion - does this hurt non-traditional learners
nurture and intentionally develp creative problem-solvers through the curriculum & instruction
differentiating & accommodating (use tech to accommodate)
use of space (physical and virtual) -- open, designed for different learning modalities and different intelligences
schools that have parallel tracks, allow students to share common spaces at times (ongoing) even if in different classes
openness (physical & virtual) with businesses and organizations -- possibly even having students work alongside of employees
educators collaborating as experts in their own fields -- learning as a community

PD embedded -- no more binge PD -- must be embedded, ongoing, supported constantly with followup and daily contact
give teachers time to get together to work on blogs, wikis, etc.
Leadership -- from supervision to coaching & support
leadership -- teachers at top of org chart
utilize retired teacher as mentors and support for new teachers
